MISSION OPPORTUNITIES
2019

Interserve Current Health & Medical openings / needs

1. Allied Health professionals, Central Asia

  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physio
  • Speech Therapist

This local rehabilitation centre for children with Cerebral Palsy opened in 2011. It aims to provide high-quality rehabilitation to children with CP (age 0-16) who can’t afford to pay for therapy that’s available. It’s run by local neurologists and therapists with currently an early intervention centre (age 0-3 years) and two rehabilitation centres for children age 3-16.

The job involves working with a local team, with opportunities to provide training for the staff, teaching parents and working with children on a day-to-day basis.

The applicant should be flexible and open to working with the local health care system. There are many challenges in working in health care according to evidence-based practice, but through working alongside local staff there will be opportunities for learning and development. It is important to have some level of local language. Translators can be provided for training.

2. Pakistan

This is a 60-bed mission hospital in a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas, whose purpose is to care for the physical and spiritual needs of the local population.

Needs:

  • Physicians: We need physicians, both male and female. We can helpfully receive physicians in most specialties, but there is a particular need for a female obstetrician/gynaecologist as well as General Practice or Family Practice physicians. The positions include Monday-to-Friday clinics, daily rounds, and care for inpatients. Also care for OB, medical, paediatric, and general surgery patients as per specialty. All doctors take part in night calls.
  • Dentist: to do basic restorative work
  • Anaesthesiologist
  • Midwife Tutor
  • Ultrasound technician
  • Lab technologist / Trainer

Long- and short-term opportunities are available in each profession, for both males and females. Volunteers should be professionally qualified in their profession. In this challenging environment, it is helpful to have a hardy personality and a good sense of humour.

Also openings for Medical Electives at this hospital

3. Obstetrician, Bangladesh

This rural 150-bed hospital does nearly 4000 deliveries each year. The hospital has an active community health program and there are opportunities to be involved in research as well as clinical obstetrics. It is an integrated rural health and development program with extensive community work, and there are strong links between the community antenatal clinics and the hospital.

An obstetrician is urgently needed for the hospital after the departure of a long-term senior obstetrician. The post includes a significant training component as national junior doctors are part of the team and come expecting postgraduate training. The hospital is nationally known for its training of nurse-midwives and community midwives as well as doctors. The existing obstetric team is about 50 per cent national and 50 per cent international doctors.

A capacity-building attitude will be a daily necessity (sometimes it is easier to do it yourself than teach someone else), but the hospital is in a unique position for holistic ministry at a number of levels.

There are many other needs at this hospital, including:

  • Paediatrician
  • Internal Medicine doctor
  • Anaesthetist
  • Psychiatric Nurse
  • Midwife , and more

These are long-term needs but short-term workers can also make a difference by covering locums and supporting long-term workers.

4. ARAB WORLD

A Christian hospital provides ministry and medical services to local people in a beautiful town.

Needs:

  • General doctors
  • Nurses
  • Faculty to teach resident family doctors

English ability is a must and the candidate will need to learn Arabic.

Candidates should be confident in being able to work independently, be flexible and adaptable. Duration not less than 3 months.

Many other opportunities for medical/health professionals and medical trainers around Asia and in the Arab world. https://interserve.org.au/serve/explore-opportunities/?profession=15

INTO AFRICA - 20 June - 9th July 2018  - Doctors required

The Into Africa trip is run for Wycliffe Bible Translators, Australia, at the invitation of local partners, into remote/isolated/poor communities where translators are working, and have requested such a service be provided. These trips have been conducted for over 15 years primarily into Kenya, at the invitation of, and in conjunction with, Bible Translation and Literacy, Kenya (BTL).  All members of the team are volunteers who pay there own way (this year cost is expected to be between $6000-6500 pp) for flights, meals accommodation etc. In addition fund raising is carried out to enable us to purchase the supplies needed (our assistance is provided free of charge)

The team is made up GP's, RN's, pharmacists and non-medical personnel, departing on 20th June, returning on 9th July.  At this point in time we need a couple of Doctors who would like to join the team to provide basic medical care/treatment, to support the work of the translators,  and to be part of a very different cultural experience.
