Introduction
‘Life Matters’ is a day conference at which we will be exploring some of the issues around the beginning of human life. It will be particularly helpful for Christians in healthcare professions however people of all occupations and religious views are welcome to attend. Our goal is to discuss what can be complicated and emotive issues with gentleness, integrity and compassion thereby equipping and educating delegates.
Speakers and Topics
We are pleased to have three highly qualified speakers who will not only deliver talks but will have time to answer delegates’ questions. Dr Megan Best, a medical doctor, has been involved in medical ethics for over fifteen years. She has written on many topics including euthanasia, stem cells and cloning, genetics, assisted reproduction and health resource allocation and she is a popular public speaker. She is currently completing a book on the ethics of reproduction. Debbie Garratt is the executive Director of Real Choices Australia and is a health professional with extensive experience in the development of training courses in adult education and counselling. Debbie speaks both nationally and internationally on the professionalising of pregnancy support services, education and health issues, specifically the experiences of women and men who have experienced abortion as a negative event. Dr Chong Ong is a Canberra based medical doctor with a certificate in theology. He is a clear communicator about Christian beliefs and how they impact the medical profession and society. Subjects covered during the conference will include why Christians have traditionally held the view that ending innocent human life is wrong, the impact that abortion has had on individuals and society, the science behind stem cell research, and some of the ethical dilemmas that Christians may have around the subjects of abortion and stem cell research.
(Please note that this conference is being presented from a Christian worldview, and while anyone from other worldviews is welcome to attend we will be educating Christians rather than debating those with different views)
Venue and Cost
The venue is the Haydon-Allen Lecture theatre at the Australian National University, Canberra. Registrations open at 9am and the conference program commences at 0930am. Morning tea will be served, but delegates will need to bring their own lunch (or come prepared to buy lunch from a nearby cafe). Proceedings will conclude at 1600pm.

We look forward to spending the day with you, and trust that you will find the conference relevant, helpful and encouraging.
