South Australia

“Only Luke is with me.” 2 Timothy 4:11

Grace and peace to you! The South Australian branch of CMDFA is dedicated to supporting, inspiring and training doctors, dentists and students to fulfil their calling as health workers whose one goal is to serve the Living God in all that we do.

We have many serving overseas and in regional areas as well as in Aboriginal communities in SA/NT. Currently we run weekly fellowships at both medical school campuses in Adelaide. If you are members, we really encourage you to invite friends who may not have been aware of the work of CMDFA to be part of our fellowship, and come to functions even if they are not yet members.

If you are not a member of CMDFA but are located in Adelaide or rural SA, we encourage you contact us, to come to an event or a weekly meeting, and to explore how we can support you as you strive to integrate faith and practice in your working life.

Feel free to email us regarding issues of practice that relate to our faith in SA, or specific points for prayer. God intends that we, just like Luke our fellow physician in the faith, will continue working with Him to the end.

Recent Events

On July 4 we held our annual dinner at Ayers House in Henry’s Brasserie, an exceptional venue for a much-welcomed night of encouragement and inspiration. We were privileged to be addressed by Professor Louise Baur, a long-standing member of CMDFA and renowned expert on childhood obesity. She challenged us with a biblical perspective of how and why we should care about the coming epidemic of childhood obesity and the powers in our society that dictate how we live and what we eat. This generated perhaps the longest and most stimulating discussion of any CMDFA event we have held to date!

An opening address was give by Rikki Lambert on behalf of the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of SA. He spoke from the heart (without notes or visual aids!) about his vision for SA and potential changes in legislation that threaten the right of medical workers to practice under conscience. A number of Christian lawyers were also in attendance (another first for our state branch!) and we were grateful for their support and look forward to working more closely with their fellowship in the future. Many students from both Flinders and Adelaide University also attended and there was a real spirit of fellowship with many exchanges of emails, table swapping and lively discussion. Among these, David Williams, a lawyer and general secretary of Church Missionary Society SA/NT Branch, spoke to a number of medical students interested in mission – we are grateful for his attendance and heart to see SA students sent out!

The NOT FOR SALE tour by Prof. David Batstone, lecturer in ethics from University of San Francisco: Members of CMDFA attended a series of speaking events in Adelaide on June 30th unveiling their research and solutions to tackle the unprecedented volume of human trafficking worldwide and in Australian cities including Adelaide! He had a refreshing perspective on the use of technology, including iPhones and GPS, to begin to address a problem that is largely invisible to the average Australian consumer and tourist.
